When suffering from pain or stiff muscles from either a strain or other injuries to your muscles, your whole life can be upset. Living in pain on a daily basis is natural for some, however, with the advanced medicine we now have available, it doesn’t have to be that way. Muscle relaxants will help you to relax the injured muscles, as well as relieve the pain and stiffness caused by injuries. Many muscle relaxants, such as Carisoprodol, also called Soma, and Robaxin will help you to reduce your pain by relaxing the muscles in your body.
Soma is the brand name of one of the more popular muscle relaxants that are used to relieve pain and stiffness of the muscles caused by injury. The generic name is Carisoprodol and it by blocking nerve impulses, which is what will give you the sensation of pain, your brain will not receive the message that you are, in fact, in pain. This drug, however, is not a cure for a sprained muscle or other injury. It is simply something to treat the symptom of pain and stiffness and rest, as well as physical therapy, will more than likely be used to treat your injury.
As with almost any drug, there are limitations to who can take it. For example, if you have had any type of kidney or liver disease, your dose of Carisoprodol may be monitored even closer by your physician. Women who are pregnant or lactating should also speak to their doctor before taking such a drug as well, as it is unknown if it could cause damage to the unborn baby or pass through breast milk. Carisoprodol may also cause one to feel drowsy, as well, so precautions should be taken when using. However, Carisoprodol, even with side effects, such as headache, depression, or insomnia, will work to relieve the pain caused by an injury to your muscles.
Robaxin is another drug commonly used to treat pain and stiffness in muscles caused by an injury. The generic name for Robaxin is Methocarbamol and like, Soma, it works by blocking the nerve impulses to the brain. Therefore, it will block your sensations of pain. As with other muscle relaxants, Robaxin is not a cure for the injury, but a medication to treat the symptoms of pain and stiffness in the muscles and is sometimes used to treat the symptoms of tetanus, as well.
Some common side effects of Robaxin include drowsiness, dizziness, headache, nausea, and discoloring of your urine. More serious side effects that would indicate you should stop taking the medication are allergic reaction symptoms, such as a rash, hives, or difficulty breathing, as well as a fever and any nasal congestion. If you’ve had a kidney or liver disease, as with Soma, your doctor may monitor your intake of Robaxin more closely. Pregnant and lactating women should also speak to their doctor before taking as whether it will cause harm to an unborn baby or pass into the breast milk is not known.
Muscle relaxants are designed to block the nerve impulses that are sent to your brain when you are in pain. They will decrease the amount of pain you are in, as well as relieving some of the stiffness in the muscles that are associated with an injury. Your doctor may prescribe Soma or Robaxin to you to help you treat any symptoms related to your injury and as with any medication, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions. The good news is with either Soma or Robaxin, you’ll soon be feeling better. |
